BACKGROUND:

 

The Kansas City Teacher Residency (KCTR) is designed to accelerate student achievement in local district and charter schools through the recruitment, preparation, and support of highly skilled and diverse new teachers. KCTR’s mission is to serve high-need urban schools in Kansas City, Missouri through the lens of our core values of mission-driven, high expectations, collaboration, growth mindset, care and love, ownership, and persistence. The Kansas City Teacher Residency is a post- graduate teacher preparation program that offers more time and development that is focused on teaching in high-need urban schools, more coaching and support through the residency year and in the first three years of teaching, and more time in schools learning alongside a master teacher for a full school year.

 

Pioneered in the early 2000s in Boston, Chicago, and Denver, urban teacher residency programs adapt the medical residency model to teacher preparation and are designed to provide residents with the skills, knowledge, and practical experiences necessary to become effective urban teachers. The Kansas City Teacher Residency will prepare residents to be highly effective teachers by providing the following:

 

  • A rigorous, year-long clinical experience with a highly effective mentor teacher focusing on the instructional practices that drive student learning;
  • Concentrated and aligned coursework focused on urban education culminating in a teacher certification and Master’s Degree;
  • A collaborative cohort experience with fellow residents who share a passion for urban education;
  • A comprehensive Resident Graduate program during years 1-3 as a teacher of record

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Directs the KCTR experience from Resident through Alumni
  • Oversee the key functions of the organization, and Residency Programs to ensure school partnerships, selection, achievement benchmarks, certification, and coursework meet goals and priorities
  • Directly manage the Continuum Experience Managers, along with overseeing the healthy function of their teams
  • Manage school district and charter school partnerships
  • Ensure that Residents are making the growth and achievement necessary in their clinical experience and their coursework to meet organizational goals and priorities
  • Ensure that Resident Graduates and their students are making the growth and achievement necessary to meet organizational goals and priorities
  • Conduct weekly continuum meetings to ensure that there is vision alignment throughout the Program Continuum
  • Meet quarterly with school partners to update progress of Residents and Resident Graduates
  • Conduct site based visits to observe program in action in order to make informed data based decisions to assess and make recommendations on how to continually improve program outcomes for Residents, Resident Graduates, and

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership or related field is highly preferred
  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience in school leadership as an assistant principal and/or principal, or leader in a nonprofit education organization managing and leading operation and program teams is highly
  • Track record of success in leading highly effective teams
  • Previous teaching experience required; previous coaching experience preferred
  • Proven ability to manage teams and drive results
  • Passionate about education reform and innovative teacher preparation programs
  • Ability to collaborate with multiple partners and navigate varying interest
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills to work efficiently and independently
  • Awareness of and comfort with issues of diversity, specifically around race, class, and gender; ability to easily engage in and facilitate discussions about diversity without unduly focusing on them
  • Ability to interact with diverse populations
  • Experience in urban public schools, with a deep understanding of the opportunities and challenges within that dynamic environment is preferred
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet goals and deadlines both independently and cooperatively
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate data to drive decision making

  • Track record of success in academic and professional settings
  • Strong communication skills that to effectively communicate with diverse colleagues and stakeholders
  • must exhibit a keen sense of responsibility and enjoy working with multiple demands, shifting priorities, and constant change.
  • Solid working knowledge of visualization and or data management software Intermediate or advanced knowledge of excel is a plus
  • A willingness and ability to learn new software
  • Embody an entrepreneurial spirit encompassing a sense of personal urgency and responsibility for program success
  • Excellent communication skills: well-developed verbal skills, writing skills, and strong presentation skills
  • Skilled in managing and building relationships
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all members of the KCTR team at all levels within the organization
  • Capacity to make verbal presentations as required
  • Adequate understanding of nonprofit start-up and team dynamics
  • Strong analytical skills with an ability to assimilate to new information and processes quickly with solid judgment and decision-making abilities
  • Solid understanding of the content, processes, deliverables and overall objective of the KCTR program
  • Ability to remain a calm and competent demeanor in uncomfortable situations
  • Should be tactful and diplomatic with good listening skills and an approachable personality. Must be capable of building and sustaining long-term relationships

 

Travel: This position will require occasional business travel.
