Our city needs great educators. Become a teacher through the Kansas City Teacher Residency and make a difference in the lives of Kansas City kids. This one year residency program is for college graduates and professionals who want to become excellent teachers and make an impact.
During your one-year residency, you will be paired with a master teacher, be immersed in rigorous coursework that will lead to a Master’s Degree from the University of Missouri, Kansas City, and earn your teaching certification. After the residency year, graduates will be ready to effectively lead their own classrooms in high-need public schools.
Urban teacher residency programs adapt the medical residency model to teacher preparation. Across the country, there are more than 20 urban teacher residencies that blend a year of apprenticeship with graduate coursework and resident-mentor relationships. Distinguished from traditional teacher training programs, urban teacher residencies have dramatically improved the amount of time and quality of teacher candidates’ clinical experiences, ensuring that residents are able to effectively serve students on day one.
Since 2016, KCTR has been charged with high-quality preparation of teachers in the Kansas City area. As KCTR approached maturity, we looked for support to refine our business and financial model to ensure long term sustainability. Over four months, the KCTR team engaged in an intensive strategic planning process.
At KCTR, we see a Kansas City that has dedicated, diverse and homegrown teachers that are able to understand and cater to the unique needs of our urban students.
Just like in a medical residency, you’ll get hands-on urban teaching experience under the tutelage of one of our established Kansas City mentor teachers.
Whether you’re looking to become a teacher resident, a donor or a sponsor, we’re always excited to get in touch with people that care about KC as much as we do.
