Financial Supports: Why Choose KCTR

Our approach to costs and accessibility

Too often, finances keep well-qualified individuals from joining education, so we work to make the financial components of our teacher training program as reasonable as we can. Below is an overview of the costs associated with the program and the financial benefits that come with the residency. There are many extenuating circumstances that may impact these numbers, some of which are discussed below. However, personal financial circumstances and other factors will also influence these elements.

Read below for more details about the financial benefits and costs associated with the Residency program.

Why Choose KCTR

Financial Benefits

Financing a graduate degree program can be an obstacle. KCTRs financial package includes both program-specific financial supports and Federal Financial Aid. These supports make our program a financially competitive option for pursuing teacher certification and master’s degree. Read below for the specific financial benefits our program offers.

Financial Benefits Details

Residency Stipend

KCTR provides a $20,000 living stipend for residents during the residency year to help aid their living costs as they commit to the full-time residency programming. This taxable stipend is dispersed across 12 months on a bi-monthly basis. After the residency year, Graduates are then teachers-of-record earning a salary from their school site. Public school teacher salaries are set by the district and are publicly viewable on the school district’s websites.

Black Educator Initiative

Black Residents are eligible for the Black Educator Initiative. This includes funding through the Josephine Silone Yates scholarship and additional certification and emergency funds support.

AmeriCorps Benefits

As AmeriCorps service members, Residents are eligible for various benefits including:

    • Segal Award – The residency year is also an AmeriCorps term of service and therefore after their year of service, Residents are eligible for an education award of $6,495 that can be used on loans or tuition.
    • Childcare assistance – Through AmeriCorps, members have access to childcare assistance.
    • Loan Deferment – While serving, members can defer payments for student loan payments
    • Interest forbearance – For qualifying members, you can request that the interest accrued during the residency year on any student loans be deducted.

And more!

This is an optional grant managed by the Federal Government that many residents are eligible for and may choose to pursue to help cover the cost of their tuition. The requirements for the TEACH grant are separate from and beyond the KCTR commitment. The TEACH Grant Program provides grants up to $4,000 a year to students who are completing coursework and are committed to teaching for at least four years after completion of their master’s degree. The Federal Student Aid website has more details and information about eligibility requirements.

Health Insurance

KCTR subsidizes a portion of the cost for Residents enrolling in the plan endorsed by KCTR.

Textbooks for Residency Coursework

Residents are provided textbooks free of charge during the residency year.

Access to UMKC student benefits

As an enrolled student of UMKC, Residents have access to the UMKC Health Clinic, mental health services, recreation center, student housing, Student Union, and UMKC financial aid & scholarships.
